Welcome to the first week of Lent,
English Language Arts: The spelling words this week are focused on plural nouns and how to spell them –s, -es, and -ies (ex: clams, caves, babies etc.). We will have our weekly vocabulary quiz and spelling test on Thursday, along with the homework notebooks being due. I didn’t have a chance this weekend to grade everyone’s homework notebook, so I apologize if there is not a score for last week’s homework. We are also finishing up our text features lesson, and will be talking about point of view.
Math: We are working thorugh our Winter Measurement Olympics, where students are representing different countries and completing in different types of measurement games. We are talking about customary and metric distance (in, ft, yd, mi, mm, cm, m, km), customary and metric capacity (gal, qt, pint, cup, oz, L, mL), and customary and metric weight (lb, oz, Tons, grams, kg). We will not have a quick quiz this week, because of Ash Wednesday.
Religion: Students are finishing up their Ten Commandments through Legos on the Chromebooks here at school. We will be sharing those with our reading buddies later this month. We will also be talking about Lent and the importance of this season in the Catholic Church.
History: We are working in Unit 3, learning about explorers and fur traders. Students will have a video project they will be doing in class with me, however we will not begin the actual filming portion of this project for a couple of weeks. We are currently working on writing our scripts and making sure we have the correct information. Once we are close to filming I will send out a more detailed email to everyone.
Science: Students are studying how animals get energy, and working on their study guide and review. They will continue to observe the meal worms. It takes 4 or more weeks to go through all stages of metamorphosis, but it is worth the wait when they turn into beetles right before our eyes..
IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES:

MARDI GRAS/VALENTINES PARTY:
We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, February 13. Students are not required to bring valentines, but if your child would like to, I ask that they bring enough for the class (20 students altogether). Please ask them not to address them individually, instead they can put “To my friend” or “Dear Valentine” or leave it blank and simply sign their name. This way we can distribute them with less chaos, and we have more time to enjoy our party! We will also be celebrating Mardi Gras, which is celebrated as the last day to eat rich food and enjoy games before Lent, as the Lenten period is a time to fast and reflect on the Passion of Christ. We will be making masks, talking about the significance of the celebration, and we will even have some King cake! Here is the sign up link for party items if you’d like to bring something or help out. Thank you to everyone who has already signed up! This day is also a free dress day for wearing pink, red, or white outfits.
Have a great week,
